Turkey Red is an heirloom hard red winter wheat that originated in Turkey, and was grown in the bread baskets of Europe for centuries. It arrived in Kansas with Ukrainian and Crimean Mennonite farmers fleeing Czar Nicholas II in 1873. Prized for its hardiness, rich flavors, and excellent baking qualities, Turkey Red has been recognized by Slow Food and put on their Ark of Taste. -
