Organic Barley Flakes

  • Product Info

Barley is rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, all of which enhance heart and bone health and can reduce inflammation, among many other benefits. Barley is particularly rich in beta-glucan fiber, which studies have shown to reduce low density lipoprotein (“bad” cholesterol).

We run our certified organic barley berries through our hot roller/flaker to create easy-to-use whole-grain flakes that are perfect for your favorite granola or muesli. They are also great for brewing!

Although these flakes are made from barley, you may use them as you would non-instant rolled oats, for a hot breakfast cereal, cookies, breads, and other baked goods. Our organic barley flakes have a slightly chewy texture and mild whole-grain taste.

Good flavor, hard on teeth

I bought several bags with the intention of using them for granola. I made a batch and found that there are many hard grains mixed in which is very painful on my teeth. I will need to find a different use for the rest of the bags. The flavor good.

Not for granola!

I tried the rolled barley in a granola recipe I have been making for months. I had been making it without the rolled barley because I had no local source. Having made a new batch with Janie’s rolled barley added, I will not be buying any more. In a 1/2 cup serving of the granola, I generally find 5-6 barley grains still whole. There is only 1 cup of barley in a recipe that makes 10 cups of granola! The grains are REALLY hard, like tiny pebbles. I have to spit them out. I am afraid I could crack a tooth on one. I still have all my teeth and would like to keep it that way. Perhaps if you plan on cooking it, those unrolled grains would soften, but I definitely do not recommend it for granola.

Another flake added to my breakfast cereal, cold or hot.

I love these flakes for breakfast. Even put then in a kind of breakfast omelet with tofu, kidney beans, mushrooms, leeks and egg whites. These grains replaced the quinoa I was using and the whole thing tastes delicious! Will start using the flakes in my bread now.

Great Grain!

This was my first time using Barley Flakes and I really like them. I've just used them in granola bars so far and loved the little extra crunchy texture they gave. I'm also going to use them when I make my granola, I know they'll taste great in that too!

Disappointed

Made my first batch of barley flakes the day after they arrived, and noted that about 1 in 5 of the flakes were still whole kernels. Sent an email to Janie's asking about this, but did not receive a reply.
So in my last three morning batches, there are a considerable number of whole grains that I have to chew on. Not particularly enjoying the product. Hence the Review Title. Would have appreciated
a return email.
